Grant Slaney - Founder and Director of MAPG
Grant is a 1984 graduate of the Prahran College of Graphic Design (Swinburne Faculty of Design). He began his career at Fairfax's Business Review Weekly (BRW) stable of publications, where his hard work, passion and determination led him to become art director for several of the group's titles, including Personal Investment,
PC Magazine and Today's Computers.
Grant continued to hone his skills and understanding of publication design and production with a period at the Herald Sun. Working with a team from Ken Cato Design, he played a major role in an internationally-recognised redesign of the newspaper.
Grant then started his own design studio, Grant Slaney Design, and produced many publications for publishers and associations, including The Australian Accountant, which was the member journal of the Australian Society of Accountants.
The Modern Art Production Group (MAPG) was launched as demand for specialist publication design and production grew.
UNDERSTANDING
Good design, at least part of the time, includes the criterion of being direct in relation to the problem at hand - not obscure, trendy, or stylish. A new language, visual or verbal, must be couched in a language that is already understood.
